Westbury United FC

Westbury United Football Club was formed in 1920 through the amalgamation of Westbury Old Comrades FC and Westbury Great Western Railway XI. After initial struggles in the Wiltshire County League, the club dominated Wiltshire football in the 1930s, culminating in reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Cup in 1936.

This golden era featured legendary players like Billy Pearce, who captained the County, and prolific goal scorer Bill Butler, known for scoring over eighty senior goals in a single season.

In 1934, Westbury United acquired and moved to their current home ground, Meadow Lane, which hosted an impressive crowd of around 4000 for its inaugural game against Bristol City.

The club has a proud tradition of developing talent, notably producing two centre forwards for Bristol City:

• Reg Smith, who transferred to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1930s for a "considerable fee."
• John Atyeo, a Bristol City legend who played over 600 games, scored 359 goals, and earned six England caps (scoring five goals). Atyeo is honored with a grandstand at Ashton Gate and a street in his home village.

Westbury United joined the Western League in 1984. The club installed floodlights in 1988 and achieved their first Western League honor, the Sportsmanship Trophy, in the 1988-89 season. Under Ian Harris's management, they won the Western League First Division title in 1991, gaining promotion to the Premier Division. Their highest league placing to date was fifth in the 1994-95 season.

The club also recognizes its dedicated officials, such as former Club President Ernie Barber, who served as Secretary from after World War II until 1997.
